Live With Stress
Stress has always been an unsolicited companion that we’ve had since time immemorial. Regardless of who you are, what you’re doing or where you’re from, stress never seems to leave our shadows. It has become a part of our system and all throughout, we have been trying to eradicate it. However, since stress is inevitable and will always play a role in our lives, why don’t we learn to live with it? Learn to eliminate the toll stress has on you. Here’s how:
- The glass is half-full not half-empty.
Stress has a way of eating you up like when you’re at work and busily working on a pile of projects and suddenly your boss barges in with a report due in two hours since one of your colleagues is absent, and you have to do it. Can’t she see that you’re awfully busy? Don’t you just want to scream and curse?
Well, stop cursing but learn to embrace it. Your additional task would surely add up to your pile but think of it in a different way. It can be an added competency on your resume, and you’ll be able to work on your time management skills. Try to rethink how a situation can benefit you rather than on the situation being a disadvantage.
- Think long-term
Each one of us is often caught up in the now, that we fail to see the bigger picture. We should not let every stress take us down. Take some time to reflect if the stressful situation at hand will be a perennial problem or just a spur of the moment. If it’s only momentary, focus on more useful things and on those that really matter.
- Re-connect with the things around you
Take a look at how the sun shines. Listen to a child’s laughter. Smell the flowers. Don’t neglect the beauty and opportunity that life brings. Like when you’re caught up in a traffic jam, take that time to chat with your companion beside you or to listen to your favorite radio station to catch up on the latest tunes.
- Give yourself a pat on the back
Sometimes we just can be too hard on ourselves that we fail to see that we need a break. If you have been spending long hours in the office, after work treat yourself to a nice cup of coffee or take a warm, relaxing bubble bath. Better yet, have a well-deserved weekend getaway. Learn to relax.
People have the tendency to overlook at what you’ve done that at times you have no choice but to give yourself that well-deserved pat on the back for a job well done.
- Acceptance is the key
No matter what you do, there are times that failure just seems to be on your side and this would be a whole lot harder if you’re a perfectionist. Having very high standards can give you focus. However, we also need to remain in touch with reality and set reasonable and attainable goals. Not being able to meet your goals would result to disappointments and self-defeating thoughts. Learn how to assess yourself and your capabilities in helping out a situation or in reaching a goal. Learn to accept things you can’t achieve and instead do things that you’re best at.
- Breathe and Smile
Let’s try this exercise. Count one to ten and breathe. Take a deep breath – inhale and exhale. Do you feel better? If ever you’re in a very stressful situation, don’t forget to do this. It gives you time to control your emotions, and it clears your thoughts. Aside from breathing, when stress has dampened your mood, just smile. Smiling helps you redirect your negative thoughts into a positive one, and it is contagious. It can help lighten the situation and foster good energy.
Stress, indeed, can be one’s kryptonite. It’s a good thing that we’re not born superhero like superman because if we were we would always be ultimately weakened and defeated with every kryptonite that comes our way. However, since we’re humans and not superman we have choices as to how to deal with every kryptonite, no matter how big or small.
